Series Overview: This two-part webinar series is an introduction to the peer review process for new reviewers and a refresh for those who might already be peer reviewers. In the first session, the peer review process is described and instructions for using the Journal for Healthcare Quality Editorial Manager are provided. In the second session, reviewers are guided through a systematic approach to reviewing manuscripts to provide meaningful feedback to authors and editors.
The purpose of this series is to:
1. Introduce peer review to participants.
2. Help participants decide if peer review is for them.
3. Support participants in developing competency and confidence as a peer reviewer.
4. Prepare participants to conduct peer reviews to improve the quality and value of the healthcare system.
5. Bring healthcare quality professionals, researchers, and practitioners together to guide the literature to advance better care, smarter spending, and healthier people.
Session 2 Summary: Peer review is an important part of the publication process. This second session of this series focuses on the role of the peer reviewer in the systematic process for the meaningful review of manuscripts. The webinar will tackle questions that are considered in peer review like:
· Is the paper well-written and up-to-date with the existing body of knowledge on the topic?
· Does the work make a significant contribution to the field?
· Does the paper present interesting or novel ideas?
· Is the research likely to impact practice or discussion in the discipline?
By the end of the session, the learner will be able to:
1. Explain what it means to conduct effective peer review for a JHQ manuscript.
2. Provide written, impartial feedback in a timely manner based on the merits of the work and how a manuscript is accepted (as is, minor revisions, major revisions) or rejected.
3. Document his or her viewpoints about the originality, design, methods, results and conclusions presented in a manuscript.
4. Indicate the relevancy of the work in advancing the science and practice of healthcare quality.
Rebecca S. Miltner, PhD, RN, CNL, NEA-BCis Associate Professor University Alabama Birmingham and Associate Editor, Journal for Healthcare Quality. Dr. Suzie Miltner joined UAB in 2012. She is also a Nurse Scientist at the Birmingham VA Medical Center. She has extensive clinical and leadership experience in military, private, and VA acute care settings as well as well as experience in nursing education in both academic and organizational settings. She has been a leader in driving quality improvement efforts in several health care organizations including ongoing work as a facilitator for VA improvement teams. Her interests include Improvement science, survey methods, quality of nursing care in acute care settings especially related to hospital acquired conditions such as pressure ulcers, immobility, and falls, practice variation in bedside nursing, and quality measurement.
Cathy E. Duquette, Ph.D., RN, NEA-BC, CPHQ, FNAHQ is executive vice president for nursing affairs for Lifespan Since 2010, she has served on the editorial board of the Journal for Healthcare Quality, holding the role of associate editor since 2014. In her vice president role, she is responsible for co-leading the system strategy for quality, patient safety and patient experience with her physician colleague, the executive vice president for physician affairs, as well as leading nursing and the organization’s efforts to implement lean and six sigma across the health system. Since 2006, Dr. Duquette has served as an appraiser for the Magnet Recognition Program. Her more than 30 years in healthcare includes roles as senior vice president and chief quality officer of Rhode Island Hospital, vice president of nursing and patient care services and chief nursing officer at Newport Hospital, senior vice president at the Hospital Association of Rhode Island, and staff roles in hospital quality improvement and clinical nursing in the critical care setting. She received Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in nursing from the University of Rhode Island and a Ph.D. in Nursing from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Worcester. She holds certification as a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality through the National Association for Healthcare Quality and is board certified as a Nursing Executive, Advanced through the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She was also certified as a six sigma black belt in 2014. She is an active member of the National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ) and was inducted as a NAHQ Fellow in 2013, a status of recognition for NAHQ members who have made outstanding contributions to the healthcare quality profession. She has also served on state and national task forces involving leadership development, hospital performance measurement, quality improvement, public reporting, and nursing workforce.
